How we choose electricians
An EICR is a statutory document, and it is worth exactly what the person signing it is worth. So your job goes to one local electrician, and only after they have cleared the same six checks as everyone else. Here is the list, including what gets someone turned away.

The checklist
What every electrician has to clear
Most sites in this trade say their tradespeople are vetted and leave it there. Vetted against what is the only part that matters, so this is ours in full.
1. Competent to inspect and test, specifically
Inspection and testing is its own competence with its own qualification, and it is not the same skill as installing. Plenty of excellent installers are not the right person to sign a condition report, and we check for the inspection qualification rather than assuming it comes with the trade.
Turned away for: Installation qualifications with no inspection and testing competence behind them.
2. Registered with a competent person scheme
Checked against the scheme's own public register rather than against a logo on a website. Registers exist to be searched, and it takes a minute.
Turned away for: Lapsed registration, or a scheme membership that does not cover inspection and testing.
3. Public liability insurance, in date
We ask to see the certificate and we check the expiry, not just the existence. A copy goes out with your quote so you can check it yourself.
Turned away for: An expired policy. This is the most common reason to turn someone away.
4. Reports that carry their schedule of results
You are paying for the document as much as the visit, so we read an electrician's reports before sending them a job. A ticked box with no schedule of results is not one.
Turned away for: Reports with no schedule, or with the limitations of the inspection left blank in older property.
5. Working to the current amendment of BS 7671
This matters more than usual at the moment. The 2026 amendment changed which classification codes make a report unsatisfactory, and an electrician still coding to the previous position will produce a report that says something different from what they mean.
Turned away for: No awareness that the position changed in 2026.
6. A public review record worth reading
Reviews on platforms where they can be checked, in enough volume and over enough time to mean something. We read them rather than counting them, because how a bad review was answered tells you more than the average score does.
Turned away for: No reviews, reviews only on the electrician's own website, or a pattern of unanswered complaints.
What you get
A report records circuits, codes and limitations
The verdict is the least useful part. What matters is the schedule of test results behind it, the coded observations, and an honest record of anything the inspection could not reach.
A ticked box and nothing else is a verdict with no working shown. Worth knowing before you accept one, whoever arranged it.
Why it works this way
One electrician, not five quotes
The usual model in this trade is to sell an enquiry to several companies at once. It is good for whoever sold the lead and unpleasant for everyone else: you get five calls, and each electrician prices knowing they have a one-in-five chance, which is not how anyone does their best work.

What you should still do is verify. The registration number and insurance certificate come with your quote precisely so you can check them against the scheme register yourself, rather than trusting any website, this one included.

Questions about our electricians
Do you carry out the inspections yourselves?
No. We arrange the work with a qualified local electrician who has cleared the checks on this page. They carry out the inspection and sign the report in their own name, and the contract for the work is between you and them.
Why does it matter who signs it?
Because that is what an EICR is. The regulations require the inspection to be carried out by a qualified and competent person, and a local housing authority can ask a landlord to produce the report. A document signed by someone who was not competent to sign it is not much of a defence.
How many electricians do you send my details to?
One. You are not going to spend the week fielding calls from five companies, and your details are not sold on or added to a marketing list.
Can I find out who it is before booking?
Yes. Ask at any point and we will tell you, and their registration and insurance details come with the quote so you can verify them before committing to anything.
What if I am not happy with the electrician?
Tell us. If someone is not meeting the standard on this page we want to know, because it affects everyone we send to them afterwards. Your route for the work itself is with the electrician.
How do I check a scheme registration myself?
Each scheme publishes a searchable register. Take the registration number from your quote and look it up on the scheme's own site rather than trusting a logo on any website, including this one.
